Psychology Degree: Path to Successful Career

In both medical and education field, psychology continues to be the promising career. Having a psychology degree is also an edge in finding job in the future. There are various fields where a psychology degree is applicable. As generally known, psychology is the study of human mind. It is a discipline that helps explain the mental characteristic of one person. It also helps in understanding the different attitudes of people in the society. Hence, knowledge in psychology will help one understand people which eventually builds love rather than hate.

As has been said, having a psychology degree is an edge in various fields. When one earns degree in psychology, he or she can teach psychology and other subjects associated with study of mind or mental characteristic. Apart from that, one can heal with the talking arts. In life, people are exposed to different environments and his or her mental attitude is formed by different external factors. One of the psychological disorders present in all ages is bipolar disorder. This disorder can definitely be addressed by a psychologist. Apart from that, a person who earned degree in psychology can serve in the Human Resources Department. Usually, psychology graduates are preferred in hiring employees because of their skill in determining the character of one person through tests and interviews. Furthermore, earning a psychology diploma can also make one capable of providing some psychological advice to needy people directly and through the internet.

One of the important contributions, however, of a psychology degree is helping those having psychological disorders. There are various disorders that are actually alarming not only on the victims or people inflicted with it but also the society. Students and children are distracted by their mental disability to control their activities. Aside from bipolar disorder, some people, especially, younger people can hardly resist emotional and mental reactions caused by sad, mad and unhealthy experiences like abuse. Usually, children experiencing abuses suffers the pain as they grow up. Some who have witnessed abuse can also experience trauma that will continue to haunt them as they grow old. The number of people suffering from these psychological issues is increasing. The victims also continuously suffer not only pain of being abnormal but also the pain of being mocked by people around them. Without proper assistance, the effect of these psychological disorder and trauma can bring forth tremendous effect on the victims’ lives. Committing suicide is the worst alternative that they resort to. The only hope of these victims is the skills and assistance of a psychologist.

Careers That Require A Psychology Degree

Are you having difficulty finding a course to take in college? There are many viable options you can consider and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology is one of them. While it may not give the opportunity to venture into your own private practice, there are definitely several career paths you can take with this course.

With a degree in Psychology, you would have to take psychology as one of your subjects in the undergraduate level. The 4-year degree will not make you eligible for private practice. However, if you are keen on doing so, taking a Master’s or Doctorate Degree will make you qualified for private practice.

While studying your options, however, you can consider other careers requiring a psychology degree to get you started. You can consider working in fields such as Case Management or Career Counseling. Likewise, you can work as a Psychiatric Technician, Rehabilitation Specialist, Case Worker, or Client Advocate.

In addition, you can also choose to work in areas not requiring special licenses aside from your 4-Year Psychology degree. Consider working in a state or local government as a Human Services Associate. The field of mental health will always have a room for a Case Manager or you can also work as a Residential Staff in an impatient or outpatient facilities for developmental disabilities, youth detention, or mental health.

However, there are other career options that you can consider outside of the health field. If you like a career involving people management skills, there are jobs waiting in human resources, administration, and advertising. Likewise, you can consider careers in sales, labor relations, real estate, and business services marketing. There are various jobs that requires an understanding of the functions of the human mind.

If you still want to pursue a career in Master’s Degree, the experience you have gained from working in various careers will provide invaluable help to you. Having worked in different careers will help you develop interpersonal skills, which can come in handy as you make your way up to the career ladder.

From my personal experience, I can say that this is true. When I decided to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, I wanted to use it as a stepping stone to entering medical school. But the 4-year degree in itself is already enough as I was able to work in various fields.

My Psychology degree has enabled me to work in the academe, administration, sales and marketing, and eventually writing. So there lies the attractiveness of taking a psychology degree in college.
