One of Freud’s most valuable contributions to the world of psychology:
DEFENSE MECHANISMS
This subject is surely one of the most basic principles, a foundation in psychology theory. And it is simple, too. Fortunately the concept of defense mechanisms is taught in most basic entry level Psych classes, spreading this important information to all those who may find it useful.
Defense Mechanisms are how we defend our reality. Whenever someone experiences cognitive dissonance or when there is a disagreement between the id, ego, and superego the defense are naturally created. We all are seemingly equipped with what we need to employ these helpful techniques.
Are defense mechanisms bad or good? Certainly defense strategies can be overused. They also help us to cope with what cards life has dealt us. So without them, we may not survive, in a sense, many difficult situations.
Defense mechanisms explain how individuals in extremely difficult circumstances are able to achieve greatness; whether its the businessman with moderate alcoholism who wants to start a business or the child who survives daily abuse or neglect.
According to Freud, our id, ego, and superego go head to head constantly regarding such issues.
If there is a disagreement between the id and the superego, the ego creates a defense mechanism.
Id: the most basic needs and desires, and the immediate gratification of those needs
Ego: Works and exists only for balance between the Id and the Superego; between our urges and desires vs. our morals and values.
Superego: The moral and somewhat idealistic compilation of judgment usually based on what society, parents, or others have taught us; or based on what we have chosen as our belief system.
